Phalaenopsis Hybrid Nr 12, Butterfly Orchid
The Phalaenopsis orchid is also called the butterfly orchid because of the similarity of the flowers to butterflies. The flowers often have large, broad petals that are reminiscent of the wings of a butterfly. Additionally, the flowers often have vibrant colors and patterns, just like butterflies. This similarity has led to the nickname "butterfly orchid". The Phalaenopsis orchid is originally from Southeast Asia, mainly from countries such as the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia and parts of Australia. It is an epiphytic orchid, meaning it grows wild on trees and rocks, getting its nutrients from the air and rainwater. Today, the Phalaenopsis orchid is grown worldwide and is one of the most popular indoor orchid species.
Leaf: Leaves reach a length of 15 to 25 cm
Height: Phalaenopsis can reach a height of 50 up to 70 cm.
Flowers: Phalaenopsis has very beautiful flowers. Its flowers reach a size of 5 to 8 cm.
The plants we supply have a flowering branch.
The Phalaenopsis orchid thrives best in a bright spot, but avoid direct sunlight. For example, place the orchid on an east- or west-facing windowsill, where it receives bright, indirect light. Make sure the plant is not too close to the window, as this can lead to burning of the leaves. It is important to rotate the orchid regularly so that all sides of the plant receive even light and promote growth and flowering.
A Phalaenopsis should not be too wet. One watering every seven to nine days is sufficient. Check that no water remains at the bottom of the pot. Water the Phalaenopsis again when the soil is almost dry. In the summer period, an orchid can dry up faster and more watering is required.
Repotting: it is important to repot the Phalaenopsis in orchid soil once every three years, or sooner if the soil has decomposed. For the Phalaenopsis, use an airy soil mixture that is especially suitable for orchids. Never place the Paphiopedilum in potting soil.
After flowering, cut the flower stem down to the knot (thickening of the stem) approximately halfway down the stem. From this knot the Phalaenopsis makes a new offshoot. The plant will bloom again after about 6 months / 1 year.
